Eucalyptus oil is in peak production and Cape Barron geese nest in native iris grasses to incubate their eggs. The average maximum temperature is 21°C, with the minimum 10°C. Average rainfall is 35mm. Summer During December–February, wildlife retreats to its bushland habitat to shelter from the heat of the day. The land is a contrast of golden pastures against summer wildflowers and the new growth of native trees. Conditions are dry and warm, and the earth becomes sun- bleached with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 40°C. However, summer can be unpredictable at times so if you’re planning to get out and about touring, it might be good to throw a light jumper in just in case it gets cool at night. The average maximum temperature is 27°C, with the minimum 15°C. Average rainfall is 20mm. Autumn During March–May, pastures begin to green and waterways and catchments begin to flow. Autumn is a time of transition, with some rainfall gradually providing wildlife with fresh growth to feed on. The average maximum temperature is 22°C, with the minimum 12°C. Average rainfall is 40mm. Winter During June–August, Kangaroo Island is spectacular with lush green countryside, flowing rivers and abundant wildlife. Koalas, kangaroos and wallabies emerge from their mother’s pouch, and the majestic Southern Right Whales pass by the shores. Whilst temperatures are quite a bit cooler ranging from 10°C to 20°C, there are frequent sunny days. The weather varies depending where you are on the Island, with temperatures sometimes varying several degrees. When you’re travelling in winter, be sure to take a warm jacket and something waterproof to wear. The average maximum temperature is 15.5°C, with the minimum 7°C. Average rainfall is 56mm. Kangaroo Island is Australia’s premier wildlife destination – a place where a little research and planning can transform a great trip into a trip of a lifetime.
