D’Estrees Bay is an attractive and historic area that has seen the establishment of a whaling station and a number of shipwrecks. Today, it’s virtually unspoilt, with shore-wading birds and pelicans feeding on the long stretches of beach. Spend hours exploring the large bay or drive along the coast to the south. The track is rough, but passable with a conventional vehicle, and leads to a horseshoe-shaped cove, which is the site of a popular surf-break. near the jetty or the sandy-bottomed Harriet River that enters the bay nearby. On the other side of the river, Point Ellen provides photographers with spectacular views of the Southern Ocean sending its waves crashing onto the cliff-face. Vivonne Bay is the only safe harbour on the South Coast of the Island and is the base for crayfishing boats from November to May. Barbecue, picnic areas, toilets and camping facilities are all available. The secluded Flour Cask Bay is a great place to experience the raw power of the Southern Ocean. Enjoy sweeping views of the South Coast, salt lakes and dunes that house a wide variety of bird species and other wildlife. Bales Beach is the closest beach to Seal Bay. The South Coast is depicted by its stunning, raw beaches – incredibly inviting in summer and wildly beautiful in winter. Perhaps the most famous, Vivonne Bay, was once proclaimed the ‘best beach’ in Australia after Sydney University Professor Andrew Short conducted a research study to unearth the best strip of sand Australia has to offer. Vivonne Bay is a long, curved, sandy beach superb for picnics, beachcombing, surfing and fishing. Experienced surfers enjoy the wonderful turquoise waters or excellent fishing from the jetty, beach or the Harriet River mouth. The beach can be reached by taking the road just past the Vivonne Bay store.
